The race at the top is incredibly close. A single person earning 80,000 CHF pays a 9.1% tax rate in all three of those leading municipalities. Ennetmoos pulls slightly ahead for couples earning 120,000 CHF (13.7%) and families earning 150,000 CHF (12.4%).
The actual spread
The full top five looks like this:
- Ennetmoos: Your best bet across the board, particularly if you're married or have kids.
- Beckenried: Tied for first for singles, and only a fraction of a point behind Ennetmoos for families.
- Hergiswil: Matches Beckenried on taxes, but puts you right on the border with Lucerne.
- Buochs: Sits just one-tenth of a percentage point behind the leaders across every scenario.
- Oberdorf: Matches Buochs exactly and keeps you solidly in the low-tax tier.
Dallenwil and Stans follow right on their heels at 9.3%, 14.0%, and 12.7%. The differences here are so small that taxes alone shouldn't dictate where you live.

Stans is a perfect reality check. It isn't technically the cheapest place in Nidwalden, but its central location often makes it the most practical choice.
What the small gaps really mean
Nidwalden doesn't have massive tax cliffs. If you compare the absolute cheapest municipality to the most expensive one, the gap is tiny:
- Just 0.4 percentage points for singles
- Only 0.6 points for couples
- And 0.6 points for families
Think of this ranking as a shortlist, not a strict hierarchy. If you want to live by the lake, Beckenried and Hergiswil are extremely competitive. If you care most about maximizing your tax edge, start your apartment hunt in Ennetmoos. If centrality matters more, Stans is still cheap enough to be a serious contender.
