A tie for the lowest taxes in Lucerne

If you're hunting for the absolute lowest taxes in Canton Lucerne, the current winners are Dierikon and Schlierbach. They are in a dead heat at the top of the leaderboard. In both municipalities, the burden sits at 10.6% for a single person earning 80k (single_80k), 16.2% for a couple earning 120k (couple_120k), and 14.6% for a family earning 150k (family_150k), with a tax multiplier of 135.

The next two spots are just as competitive. Kriens and Root share third place, separated from the leaders by the thinnest of margins. For both, the single rate is 10.7%, couples hit 16.2%, and families see 14.7%. Buttisholz rounds out the current top five, sitting squarely in that same low-tax tier.

Why the canton-wide spread matters

Lucerne isn't a flat canton where every municipality charges roughly the same amount. While the top five are tightly packed, the gap between the cheapest and most expensive towns is real.

Across the entire canton, the tax burden stretches from 10.6% to 11.4% for singles, 16.2% to 17.3% for couples, and 14.6% to 15.7% for families.

Currently, Wikon sits at the bottom of the list. That 0.8 to 1.1 percentage point spread means that blindly picking a municipality at the bottom of the ranking will genuinely hit your wallet. The ranking is worth paying attention to.

Building your shortlist

You should use this top five list exactly for what it is: a shortlist. Dierikon and Schlierbach are your starting points if keeping your tax rate as low as possible is your main goal.

However, because Kriens and Root are only fractions of a percent behind, you shouldn't ignore them. In fact, a slightly cheaper apartment or a much better commute in Kriens will easily outweigh the tiny tax premium.

How to use this ranking

  • Treat the top five as a solid shortlist, not a final decision.
  • Keep your exact household scenario in mind when comparing numbers.
  • Let taxes help you filter the list, but let housing and commute make the final call.
  • Always confirm your final figures with the official cantonal calculator before moving.
