Bern's answer starts with a tie

If you're trying to find the absolute lowest tax rate in the Canton of Bern, you won't find a single winner. Our current scenarios show 31 municipalities locked in a massive tie for the best single-person rate at 11.1%. For couples and families, the pack thins out slightly, leaving 16 municipalities sharing the top spot at 16.9% and 15.3%. The table above shows just the first five names in that leading group.

Because the top is so crowded, the best way to read Bern is to separate that leading block from the rest of the canton. The entire top group shares a tax multiplier of 148. Step just over the line to the next tier, and you hit 149. Down at the very bottom, the most expensive municipalities sit at 164.

What does this mean for you? It means Bern's ranking is great for building a shortlist, but terrible for making a final decision. Since so many places offer the exact same tax bill, you should base your choice on commute times, housing availability, and whether you actually like the neighborhood.

Real numbers, small gaps

Even if you compare the very best municipalities to the very worst, the financial gap won't radically change your life. From first to last place, the spread is just 0.6 points for singles, and 0.9 points for couples and families.

At the top, the lead group is broad:

  • single_80k: 31 municipalities tied at 11.1%
  • couple_120k: 16 municipalities tied at 16.9%
  • family_150k: 16 municipalities tied at 15.3%

At the bottom of the list, Zweisimmen comes in at 11.7%, 17.8%, and 16.2% with a multiplier of 164. The ranking is real, but the distances inside it remain relatively small.

Verify before you move

Our scenarios help you cut through the noise and narrow your options. Once your shortlist drops to two or three municipalities, stop relying on estimates. Run your exact income and deductions through the official cantonal tax calculator before you sign a lease.

How to read the ranking

  • Treat the first place as a tied block, not as a single municipality.
  • Keep the same household scenario across the whole comparison.
  • Use the ranking to build a shortlist, then compare commute, housing supply, and daily life.
  • Before you move, verify the final choice with the official calculator.
